Through our pantry the Hunger and Health Coalition has distributed 46,548 food boxes to our clients in need.
About the Role
The Pantry Assistant plays a vital role in supporting the operations of a food access program by helping with both food pantry management and food recovery driving. This position helps ensure that food reaches those in need through organized pantry operations and efficient delivery services.
Primary Responsibilities
Food Pantry Support
- Sort, organize, and stock food donations according to inventory guidelines
- Monitor inventory levels and expiration dates to minimize waste
- Help maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for volunteers and staff
- Assist in checking and recording freezer/fridge temperatures
- Assist with preparing regular and Food is Medicine (FIM) food boxes
- Maintain a clean and clutter-free work area with general and regularly scheduled deep cleaning
- Managing snack bag production, inventory, and ordering
- Help prepare and assign tasks to volunteers
On Call Driver Support
- Help maintain delivery schedules and documentation
- Drive vehicles on predetermined routes to collect and deliver food donations as needed
- Ensure food safety standards are kept during transportation
- Assist with basic record-keeping and reporting
- Assist with loading and unloading food deliveries
Requirements
Required Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent
Valid North Carolina driver's license with a clean driving record
Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds frequently
Ability to kneel, reach, and carry items
Flexible and adaptable to changing priorities
Preferred
2+ years of experience in retail, food programs, or customer service
Knowledge of food safety practices
Experience working in nonprofit or community service settings
Working Conditions
Full-time position with variable schedule based on operational needs
Mix of pantry and driving activities
Regular lifting and physical activity required
Operation of trucks and vans in all weather conditions
Reports to the Food Access Manager
Direct collaboration with the Pantry Coordinator and Lead Food Recovery Driver

Compensation and Benefits
- - Salary Range: $36,000 – $38,000 annually
- Health insurance w/ stipend up to $400 monthly
- 10 days PTO, 6 days sick leave, 12 paid holidays
- 3% retirement match after 1 year.
